Diamond Selection

Choosing the perfect diamond is an exciting experience – but can be an overwhelming task without some guidance.  The team at Giulians are here to assist with the process, step by step. The main factors to consider – cut, colour, clarity, carat and shape.

Cut: A good cut is an important factor to get the best sparkle from your diamond.

Colour: Most white diamonds are graded on a scale of D (colourless) through Z (light colour). All D-Z diamonds are considered white, even though they contain varying degrees of colour.  D-F are considered colourless, while G – J are considered near colourless.

Clarity: The clarity of a diamond refers to the number and type of natural inclusions or flaws within a stone. They range from flawless (F), internally flawless (IF), very very slightly included (VVS), very slightly included (VS), slightly included (SI), and included (I).  The location and type of inclusion can be an important consideration when choosing a diamond.

Carat:    Diamonds are measured by a unit called carats, or ‘ct’.  There are 100 points in 1.00 carat, and the weights are written in the form of a decimal, for example, 0.75ct, 1.00ct, 1.20ct, 2.10ct.

Shape:  The most well-known diamond shape is the round brilliant cut.  This shape is considered to be the ‘ideal’ cut, as the proportions and facets result in the maximum amount of light reflection and brilliance.  Other diamond cuts are referred to as fancy shapes and include princess, oval, cushion, emerald, radiant, pear and heart.
